Business casual is a dress code men are confronted with everywhere but what does it really mean? In this Business Casual Guide for men we answer this question in detail, explain DO’s and DON’Ts and provide specific advice on what you can wear so you are dressed to the T.
“Business casual” is a term that’s thrown around in offices and department stores around the world, but its meaning is less clear.
In one widely accepted definition, business casual dress for men calls for slacks and a collared shirt.
The shirt must be tucked in, with a belt, and dress shoes to match.
However, as many offices and industries relax their interpretation of business casual–it’s become an opportunity for men to express their own smart casual wear and blend classiness with style.
What about the less formal nights out, or day looks that work outside the office?
Trying to put these ensembles together can seriously stump many otherwise fashion forward men. If this sounds like you, this guide should help you in those moments of doubt.

Business Casual For Men
Business casual sounds like an oxymoron, right? Don’t get caught up with the casual part, and show up wearing distressed jeans and sandals; view men’s business casual as an opportunity to expand your style and use of color.

What Is Casual Dressing For Men
Men’s casual wear translates to style with comfort. These are clothes that won’t cause too much of a stir for trendsetters but are ideal for those everyday trips where durability and fit are key. Casual dressing embodies a sense of streetwearwith fashion; therefore casual clothes for men tend to lean towards the absolute wardrobe basics.
The trick to how to dress casual is to choose pieces that aren’t specific to any given season, and are made from a quality material and cut. Casual dressing calls on layering separate – be it a pair of well-worn jeans with a basic T-shirt or an Oxford shirt tucked into an easy pair of summer chinos. It depends on the occasion that you’re dressing for. A casual outfit to run errands will differ from a casual outfit for a summer party or event.
What Is Smart Casual Dressing Style For Men
“Smart casual is destined to be one of those terms that history will not be kind to,” says Josh Sims, author of Men of Style. “Thankfully, the recent explosion in non-designer-y brands offering considered, very wearable clothing is making moot the second-guessing of whatever the term means. Because actually, it’s all quite smart now – but in a comfy way.”
Smart casual means nothing, so it can mean anything. According to Mr Porter’s Style Advice page, the smart casual gamut comprises “pretty much anything smarter than a tracksuit, but less formal than a suit”. Thankfully, and rather more informatively, Mr P adds, “An ideal answer is a blazer, white shirt, neat jeans, and brown loafers.”
Smart Casual attire is a blend of two innately different dress codes. On the one hand, the term ‘smart’ alludes to a dressed-up aesthetic, something more formal than your classic t-shirt and jeans. Relaxed, calm, cool, simple; casual attire brings to mind clothing that is anything but ‘smart’. Obviously, smart casual is a blend of the two dress codes; but it has developed as a more complex style trend. This attire is certainly more relaxed and innately casual; but it plays off deconstructions of formal wear, still resembling a contemporary dialogue.
Dressing Sharp in Causal Outfits
It’s safe to assume that most young men have a couple of pairs of jeans, some T-shirts, a sweatshirt or two, and maybe a few button-down shirts in their wardrobe. If you don’t have those, you’re either unusually well-dressed or very inventive.
The way to go from looking like everyone else to looking sharp and stylish is to take those basic wardrobe pieces and swap a few of them out for pieces that are nicer but aren’t necessarily any more formal. When everyone else is wearing jeans and T-shirts or hoodies, you stand out by being the guy in something a little different.

What Is The Best Casual Dress Code For Men
I’m not sure I would call it the best casual dress code, but it’s definitely attractive and easy. The clothes are all casual and common but should be fitted for best results. A good fit can have a significant effect; someone dressed very casually can look much more stylish than someone dressed more formally.
Thin light grey hoodie with zipper
Don’t buy the first grey hoodie you find. It needs to be a fitted style instead of big and bulky. Make sure it’s thin and light since you don’t want to get hot in it. You can wear it zipped or wear it open. Choose light grey; it’s easier to pair with more options than dark grey.
Skinny or slim jeans
They don’t have to be skinny exactly, but they should be close fitting. Color doesn’t matter. Wear light blue jeans, medium, dark, or black.
While this is a casual outfit, a white t-shirt can sometimes be too casual. Try other colors as well. You can wear neutrals like black or navy, but a bold color like red looks good too. Stripes or other patterns are also good choices.
Since it’s a casual outfit, almost any shoes will work: neutral sneakers, boots, chukkas, converse, toms, etc.
For casual wear, men need not make hard efforts. More simple they are smarter they look. By word simple, I don't mean that men need not wear trendy clothes but they shouldn't be over funky.
- Light colored t-shirts and dark colored jeans or chinos(not too narrow)
- Well fitted shirts(untugged) and dark chinos.
